Summary
The 1.6 update forStardew Valleybrought with it so much new content it was recommended players start a brand new save file to experience everything. For the most part, players have universally loved the update, noting the care necessary for ConcernedApe to add so many new features at no additional cost to players. But not all of the changes were necessarily welcome.
Though the 1.6 update was focused primarily on bringing new content to the game, some other items and features were subject to changes and patches, resulting in some long-loved exploits and cheats being removed. Because of this, there are a handful of things players aren’t exactly happy about in 1.6.Some of these complaints have solutions that aren’t immediately obvious, but there are a handful of adjustments that multiple players have found issues with as they progress through their new save files.

Stardew Valley 1.6 Hidden Detail Proves ConcernedApe Is Listening To The Community
An inquisitive Stardew Valley fan shares their discovery that proves developer ConcernedApe genuinely listens to, and appreciates, players' feedback.
10Clay Farming Is Harder In 1.6
Complicated Clay Farming, Legacy Mode Offers Workaround
Before the 1.6 update released, clay farming was incredibly easy to do, offering both an easy way to make money early in the game while also being an easy resource to collect for crafting. In previous versions ofStardew, players were able to consistently collect clay using a pattern; by hoeing the dirt one tile up and three tiles to the right of the first spot the farmer hoed, players could theoretically stock up on clay incredibly quickly. Unfortunately, the 1.6 update changed this, making it so the pattern no longer works.
When starting a new game, turning on “legacy randomization” will make clay farming possible again, though those already well into their 1.6 save files will need to start a new one to make this work.

“The new nerf mean that artifact spots and hoeing dirt in the mines is the only reliable way to find it,which is a little wrong for something so fundamental to civilization,” Reddit userKodiak_Marmosetcommented. Getting the necessary amount of clay for crafting silos is now much harder for players. There is a way to reactivate the old clay farming formula, though. When starting a new game, turning on “legacy randomization” will make clay farming possible again, though those already well into their 1.6 save files will need to start a new one to make this work.
9The Sale Price Of Tea Saplings Has Now Been Halved
Update Slashes Tea Sapling Profits
Tea saplings were a new item introduced toStardew Valleyas part of the 1.4 update. Obtained from Caroline during her two-heart event, the recipe to make one requires two wild seeds (from any season), five fiber, and five wood, making them incredibly accessible to players early in their save files.Initially, tea saplings could be sold for 500 gold a piece— more than five times the base price for the materials needed to make them.
Unfortunately, the 1.6 update halved the sale price of tea saplings, marking them down to a measly 250 gold. This is still significantly more than the base prices for all of its crafting materials, but it’s no longer the reliable money maker it once was.“I feel like the nerf could be less extreme so it’s still a viable strat people can use,” user Emma_JM commented. There is a old sapling price mod onNexus Modsavailable to restore its old price (changing nothing else), but those playing an unmodded game will have to find other money-making methods.

Each farm type in Stardew Valley has a unique layout. It’s important to place your crops, animals, and equipment in the best spots on each farm.
8Players Can No Longer Plant Trees In Town
Update Limits Pelican Town Tree Planting, But There Are Decor Options
The options to decorate Pelican Town have, unfortunately, been limited with the 1.6 update. It’s not entirely clear why this change was made, butplayers are no longer able to plant their own trees around town. This was previously used by many players looking to decorate the town, adding a bit of their own pizzazz to the otherwise plain downtown — and it’s one of the most contested changes made to the game.
“Those trees I plant really change the aesthetic of the townand now it’s going to remain drab and ugly, save for the new stone pathing I can lay,” Reddit user1031Catsaid of the change. Players can still use the various crafted pathsand some new decorto add a touch of personality to the town, but other customization options have been restricted. That said, the spa area is still available for players to plant as many trees as they want for those who need a place to farm trees, but the whole world is no longer players' decorative oyster.

7Rain Totems Will No Longer Allow For Lightning Storm Chains
No Triggeing Up to Three Stormy Days in a Row
Before the 1.6 update, players who were looking to stock up on their battery packs (or just get out of watering their crops multiple days in a row) couldchain their stormy days using rain totems. In previous versions of the game, players could trigger up to three stormy days in a row, though it seems rain totems no longer allow for this. Instead, storms continue to be a one-time event left to chance.
The ability to use a rain totem to chain stormy days was apparently a bug, per the full changelog for the 1.6 update. In the notes,ConcernedApenotes that rain totems used during a story were “incorrectly making the next day stormy instead of rainy.” Those who are just looking for multiple rainy days in a row can still chain rainy days, but lightning storms can no longer be triggered this way.

One dedicated Stardew Valley player demonstrates how to rake in millions of dollars without ever setting foot outside of their own farm.
6Bombs Are Now More Expensive
Price Hike for Skull Cavern Bombs
Bombs are essential for those trying to reach level 100 in Skull Cavern. Though an upgraded pickaxe and a powerful sword are great starting points, the only way to make any significant progress is to utilize the bombsto clear large patches of rocks quickly and uncover shafts. Crafting the amount of bombs needed for a successful run requires a lot of grinding in the mines — but the Dwarf has always sold them for a decent price for those who have a consistent income.
But the 1.6 update upped those prices, meaning players will need to get a better handle on their finances before giving the Dwarf’s shop a visit. Before the update, mega bombs could be purchased for 600 gold, butnow players will have to shell out 1,000 gold a piece. It’s a pretty significant price increase, and a lot of players have needed to rethink their typical strategies to work around this.

5Players Now Have To Pay For Certain Farmhouse Renovations
Upgrading A House is Now More Expensive
House upgrades have already been a bit pricey inStardew Valley, butrooms that were previously free to players now cost a pretty penny.Once players reach the second upgrade of their farmhouse, they have the option to add on multiple rooms, like an attic, a dining room, and a cubby in the living room. Those who want to add the southern room and corner room, though, will have to shell out quite a bit of gold.
These rooms were previously free, butnow players have to pay 30,000 gold for the southern room and 20,000 gold for the corner room.ConcernedApe also adjusted the second farmhouse upgrade, reducing the number of hardwood needed from 150 to 100 but increasing the cost by 15,000 gold to 65,000 gold.
Stardew Valley 1.6’s New Giant Crop Is A Terrifying Addition To Your Farm
One of Stardew Valley’s fruits has become giant with the 1.6 update and has since been deemed “nightmare fuel” by players.
4Tree Stumps No Longer Drop Tree Seeds
The End of the Stump Seed Method
There’s rarely a shortage of tree seeds inStardew Valley, but those looking to horde the ones they’ve collected from chopping down some lumber were previously able to leave the stumps behind to grow more trees. Though the stumps can be cut down with just a couple more swings of the axe, leaving them behind used to spawn multiple seeds in the adjacent tiles.Unfortunately, this was also changed in the 1.6 update.
Similar to the rain totem glitch, this was apparently a bug that ConcernedApe patched with the update, according to the change log — but it’s still an adjustment some players are unhappy with.“I would always leave stumps on my farm early game to get seeds for field snacks,” useraachen_said in a comment on another Reddit post about some of the least-favorite changes in the update. Fully grown trees will still drop seeds, but once they’re chopped, the stump does little else than take up space.
3Mushroom Caves Now Harvest Every Other Day
A Return to Every-Other-Day Harvests
Choosing the mushroom cave option when Demetrius offers to modify the on-farm cave has often been the more fruitful choice, especially whenthe harvest rate was increased with the 1.5 update. Previously, users could harvest mushrooms from the cave every day, netting them a minimum of 240 gold a day (if only common mushrooms spawn). The 1.6 update also included a free dehydrator to create some of the new artisan goods.
Unfortunately, it seems that ConcernedApe made the decision to reset the harvest rate for the mushroom cave back to every other day. Though it was “unintentionally changed” in the 1.5 update, it was a change many players had welcomed. Now, the mushroom cave is back toits regular every-other-day harvest.
2Golden Pumpkins Are No Longer The Yearly Prize At The Spirit’s Eve Festival
Festive Changes and the Elusive Golden Pumpkin
The 1.6 update brought some significant changes to the festivals, introducing new offerings and experiences for players who attend a festival in different years. Previously, the Spirit’s Eve festival was a pretty repetitive one, with the golden pumpkin waiting at the end of the same maze every year for the player to collect.By year two, though, players will find a different prizeat the end of the (remixed) maze.
Though players can still collect it at the Spirit’s Eve festival every odd year, they’ll have to look in other places if they want a collection of them.
For those who rely on the golden pumpkin as a great gift to give NPCs (or those who want to make a plethora of witches' hats), the item is pretty essential. Though players can still collect it at the Spirit’s Eve festival every odd year, they’ll have to look in other places if they want a collection of them.Golden pumpkins are also obtainable through artifact troves, mystery boxes, and golden mystery boxes, though there’s no way to control what’s actually inside these breakable items, leaving it to chance.
10 Creepy Things In Stardew Valley That Show How Scary Haunted Chocolatier Could Be
Stardew Valley has some pretty creepy easter eggs in the game, hinting at the scary features Haunted Chocolatier could offer players.
1Hat Mouse Has Raised The Prices Of Some Of His Hats
Exploring New Strategies in Stardew’s Economy
In an update that has reduced the sale price of some crucial items and raised the cost of other crucial items,it seems inflation has truly hit the world ofStardew Valley. To rub salt in the pricey wound, the Hat Mouse has also raised the price of some of his hats. Before the 1.6 update, every hat cost 1,000 gold — a reasonable price when considering the conditions the Hat Mouse lives in; now, some of them cost more than that, forcing players to shell out more money to collect them all.
There’s no real benefit to purchasing all the hats beyond supporting the Hat Mouse, butnew hats periodically unlock as players earn new achievements. There arenine new hats in 1.6to collect, though they’ll cost more gold. These items are purely cosmetic — but helping Hat Mouse get his bag is an important part of most playthroughs.
Before the 1.6 update, every hat cost 1,000 gold — a reasonable price when considering the conditions the Hat Mouse lives in; now, some of them cost more than that, forcing players to shell out more money to collect them all.
Of course, there are some valid arguments players have made to defend these changes. With a host of new items, it’s understandable that ConcernedApe would encourage players to explore some new strategies and ways to explore the world ofStardew Valleyinstead of defaulting to the regular strategies. But for those looking to speed their way to perfection in the new update, it’ll likely take a bit more time than it previously would’ve because of some of these adjustments.
