Summary

Fallout 4’s post-apocalyptic wasteland is home to many memorable locations, from the Vault-Tec vaults that double as twisted experiments to bustling settlements full of civilians, such as Diamond City. There are also more unique places players may only visit occasionally on their journey for the odd quest and ones that players will only find by going off the beaten path and venturing further away from any semblance of society, such as some of the moredesolate locations out in the Glowing Sea.

AcrossFallout 4,players can find several shipwrecks too, with a notable one being the USS Constitution, which is situated atop a building near Bunker Hill, and another being justoff the coast of Spectacle Island, an abandoned island once owned by an eccentric billionaire that can be transformed into a settlement. While both of these are interesting to explore - and the USS Constitution, in particular, has an amusing quest about trying to get the ship working again - there is one shipwreck that can be particularly harrowing.

The FMS Northern Star Is Full Of Decent Loot

Including A Bobblehead!

The FMS Northern Star can be found in the Commonwealth along the shore opposite the aforementioned Spectacle Island, appearing below Warwick Homestead on the map, and it is certainly worth visiting for those who want tocollect all of the bobbleheadsin the game. The shipwreck can be boarded by climbing the metal crates inside the wreck and going toward the ship’s stern, up a flight of stairs; then, when approaching the bow of the ship, players can use a lifeboat to lower themselves down into the ship’s interior.

Aboard the ship is a wealth of good loot, including an Agility bobblehead, a mini-nuke, a consumable Stealth Boy that can render the player invisible for 30 seconds, a fusion core, and more.Of course, as is common practice across theFalloutgames, players will find themselves having to fight off a group of ghoulified raiders to acquire much of what there is to offer. However, there’s one major difference about these raiders, and that’s the language they speak. While most characters in the game will speak English due toFallout 4taking place in a post-apocalyptic version of Boston called The Commonwealth, the raiders aboard the FMS Northern Star are speaking Norwegian.

The FMS Northern Star Raiders' Language Barrier Makes Their Fate Sadder

The Raiders Want To Be Left Alone

EvenFallout 4’s subtitles won’t help players understand what the raiders are saying if they’re not already familiar with the language, as they don’t translate them from Norwegian to English. Those who speak Norwegian, however, may find themselves reluctant to kill the group asthe dialogue translates to the raiders giving players a chance to leave and explaining they want to be left alone.

The language barrier makes the fates of the FMS Northern Star raiders sadder, as they would have found themselves in a foreign land with no way initially to ask for help from its inhabitants once the bombs fell. As the group seems to be confined to the shipwreck, it’s likely that after a certain point, they stopped exploring the wider lands and stuck together aboard the ship, where several suffered their transformation into ghouls. Others who may have survived in the earlier days likely had to watch their crewmates suffering this fate while fending off other creatures and factions. No wonder the ghouls that remain just want to be left alone.

Fallout 4 - FMS Northern Star - Ghoulified Norwegian Raider

After blasting through many of theWasteland’s different groupsand creatures, players can become somewhat accustomed to the violence inFallout 4. Therefore, many may have completely disregarded the FMS Northern Star raiders' attempts at bargaining by the time they encountered them, regardless of whether they didn’t understand what they were saying or not. It’s an interesting moral dilemma for those in the know, but to many, it’s one that will be completely overlooked.

At the end of the day, those looking to get every collectible inFallout 4-particularly the bobbleheads - will need to venture to the FMS Northern Star. Conflict is sadly unavoidable as the Norwegian group often shoots first, meaning they will die regardless of whether the player understands their attempts to bargain or not, bringing a sad end to an already bleak, largely isolated life.
