Superman & Loishas featured many incredible performers over the years, although few have seemed so significant toDC Universelore as one from the latest episode. Inepisode 8 ofSuperman & Lois, the tension between Lex and Superman has grown even larger, culminating in a horrifying reveal of Superman’s violent actions to the world. While this storyline is effective, and adds much to the Superman mythos, it is helped by the prominent feature of a memorable star.
The canonicity ofSuperman & Loisto the Arrowverse is a little strange, with Earth-1 being the primary setting andSuperman & Lois' Earth-38 being secondary. Other universes were also featured in the various shows. With inclusions even to the DCEU, separate canons can become difficult to manage, leading to the necessity of DC setting their newDCU apart from other stories. However, there has been one performer who previously played several different DC characters that was able to fit perfectly into the story ofSuperman & Lois.

Superman & Lois Marks Tom Cavanagh’s 6th DC TV Show Appearance Since 2014
The Canadian Actor Debuted On The Flash
Tom Cavanagh has been an important part of this DC multiverse since he appeared in the pilot ofThe Flashin October 2014. The actor played a number of different roles in that series.Cavanagh played Eobard Thawne for a time, then Harrison Wells, among other characters. With his complex abilities for characterization, it was even rumored for a time that Cavanagh would be joiningSuperman & Loisas Brainiac, although this has since been proven to be false.
Following appearances inThe Flash,Supergirl,Arrow,Batwoman, andDC’s Legends of Tomorrow, it is fitting thatthe performer would appear as Gordon Godfrey on the latest episode ofSuperman & Lois. The character appears to be linked to Glorius Godfrey, a New God in the DC Comics continuity, although that is unlikely to be realized in this series. Instead, Cavanagh’s appearance seems to be a simple cameo, allowing fans of the universe to see him one more time in its canon.

Why Tom Cavanagh Appears As A Totally New Character In Superman & Lois
Gordon Godfrey Is An Excellent Way To Use The Actor
There is already so much going on withSuperman & Lois, including stories ofSuperman losing his powersand conflicts with a complex version of Lex Luthor, thatthere is little room in these final episodes to explore any of Cavanagh’s previous lore in this multiverse.Using the character as Harrison Wells could have been done to some success, although this would likely have been distracting from the series, and would have felt out of place, especially so late in this season. Using Cavanagh as Godfrey makes more sense.
With the episode’s story using a charismatic talk show, and with Cavanagh already having an association with audiences, this important scene immediately connects.Cavanagh’s appearance here feels consistent with howSuperman & Loishas used exciting performers and memorable comic book details without distracting from its important stories. There is much to balance in the final episodes ofSuperman & Lois, but it is nice that the show found a way to give Cavanagh one more appearance before the series ended forever.

I Can’t Believe Lex Luthor Getting Beat Up By Superman Ended Up Being Part Of His Villain Plan On Superman & Lois
The latest episode of Superman & Lois shows that a previous victory by the Man of Steel may actually contribute to his ultimate downfall.
DC clearly cares about its continuity, and it also cares about its fans.Using alumni of the Arrowverse inSuperman & Loishelps the series to feel more connected, all while the story details successfully keep those winks and nods at arm’s length. Somehow,Superman & Loishas found an incredible balance throughout its series run. Seeing the show finally come to an end feels disappointing, although the great care put into the conclusion of this story, and the Arrowverse as a whole, feels lovingly and satisfyingly done.
