Summary
One of the biggest questions aboutBeetlejuice 2is what happened to Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) after the first movie, as they aren’t part of the sequel, but the second trailer hints at why they’re not around this time. Following the ongoing trend of legacy sequels and sequels to popular movies from the 1980s and 1990s, Tim Burton is finally bringing the long-awaited sequel toBeetlejuice. Appropriately titledBeetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel brings back the first movie’s main stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, accompanied by a new cast.
Set 36 years after the events of the first movie,Beetlejuice 2reunites the audience with Lydia (Ryder) and Delia Deetz (O’Hara), who return to Winter River after the unexpected death of Charles Deetz, Lydia’s father and Delia’s husband. Back at the Maitland/Deetz house, Lydia’s teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), finds the model of the town in the attic and accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife, forcing Lydia to ask Beetlejuice for help. As mentioned above, the Maitlands are no longer around inBeetlejuice 2, but the second trailer has hinted at why they are gone.

Geena Davis’ Beetlejuice 2 Update Confirms Our Worst Fears About Adam & Barbara
Original Beetlejuice star Geena Davis has given an update on her involvement in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2, confirming a disappointing sequel truth.
Beetlejuice 2’s Maitland/Deetz “Ghost House” Fame May Explain Why Adam & Barbara Are Gone
Barbara & Adam Were THE Ghosts Of The Maitland House
The second trailer forBeetlejuice 2gives a better idea of the current dynamics in the Deetz family, and they’re not the best. Astrid doesn’t get along with Lydia (to the point of having her saved as “Alleged Mom” on her phone) since the death of her father, who Lydia has failed to contact despite her ability to communicate with the dead. Charles’ death is what brings Astrid to Winter River and forces her to spend time with Lydia, and this also leads her to learn more about her family’s past, reputation, and legacy in town.
The house has been covered in drapes, most likely to keep people from peeking to see Adam and Barbara’s ghosts.

At one point in the trailer, a local teenager talking to Astrid refers to Lydia as a “legend” andcalls the Maitland/Deetz house a “Ghost House”. While he’s not wrong as Adam and Barbara were confined to their house as ghosts, this hints at why they are no longer the house’s (main?) ghosts. The house has been covered in drapes, most likely to keep people from peeking to see Adam and Barbara’s ghosts. With Delia and Lydia no longer living there, Adam and Barbara would have been left completely alone, and only with curious town residents disturbing their peace.
Adam and Barbara no longer being in their house inBeetlejuice 2might mean thatthey found some loophole in their sentence that allowed them to escape the houseand finally “move on”, thus giving some satisfying and even heartwarming closure to the Maitlands. Surely, it’s to be seen if Lydia already knew about her friends no longer being around or if she’s about to face a heartbreaking surprise.

Beetlejuice 2 Has To Mention Adam & Barbara’s Fate After Lydia’s “Legend” Status
Beetlejuice 2 Can’t Escape The Maitlands As Much As It Tries
If Lydia is so well known even by younger generations, it would make sense that they also know about the ghosts of the Maitlands.
No matter what happened to Adam and Barbara afterBeetlejuice, the sequel has to address their fate, more so after mentioning Lydia’s “legend” status in Winter River. Of course,Beetlejuice 2has to explain why Lydia has become a legend in town, but if she’s so well known even by younger generations, it would make sense that they also know about the ghosts of the Maitlands confined to the house. It could even be that Lydia was the one who helped her friends move onin the Afterlife so they wouldn’t be disturbed once she and Delia moved out.
Beetlejuice 2has many questions to answerover three decades after Lydia and Delia’s first encounter with the title bioexorcist, but its biggest mystery is the fate of Adam and Barbara Maitland. Whatever happened to them, hopefullyBeetlejuice 2will give them the closure they deserve after their unexpected death and the many ups and downs they went through thanks to Beetlejuice.
