Harry betrayed Maria, however, and it foreshadowed the treatment she would get in the originalDexter.
Throughout bothOriginal Sinand the originalDexter, Maria LaGuerta was a thorn in the sides of most of the Morgan family members. She got dangerously close to exposing Harry’s relationship to Laura Moser (Brittany Allen), she made Deb’s life difficult at Miami Metro, and she nearly exposed Dexter as a serial killer on more than one occasion. Part of the reason she was such a nuisance to Dexter and his family is because of how dedicated Maria was to unearthing the truth. Unfortunately for her, all that dedication got her was pain, andOriginal Sinproved it happened several times over a 20-year period.

Maria was hot on the trail of the NHI Killer, inOriginal Sin, but Harry kept her from solving her first major case. Shortly after Harry found out thatBrian Moser (Roby Attal) was the NHI Killer, he tried to hide Brian’s file from Maria.Harry continued to throw Maria off of Brian’s scent until he finally lied and told Angel Batista (James Martinez) that he thought Maria was crazy for thinking the killings were connected at all. If Maria had arrested Brian, it would have been a major career-defining bust, if only Harry hadn’t gaslighted her into abandoning the investigation.
Deb even ended up killing LaGuerta to protect Dexter, so the Morgans' 20 years of gaslighting literally caused her death.

Brian Moser’s Real Name Should Have Reminded Maria LaGuerta Of The NHI Killer In The Original Dexter
Even with Harry, Dexter, and eventually Deb’s gaslighting, Maria should have been able to piece together the similarities in the NHI Killer case and the Ice Truck Killer case. At the very least,the name Brian Moser should have jogged her memory about the first major case she worked at Miami Metro, and it probably should have led her to reevaluate Brian’s files. If she had reexamined the NHI Killer, she could have both closed a decades-old cold case and began unearthing parts of Dexter’s past. Maria even could have exposed Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher without getting killed.
