The perfect director for a live-actionDragon Ball Zmovie has already proven that he could deftly translate the unique fight scenes onto the big screen.Dragon Ball Zwas technically already adapted into a live-action film with the 2009 effortDragonball Evolution, directed by James Wong and produced by Stephen Chow. But that movie was an abomination. It whitewashed the cast, it was completely unfaithful to the source material, and it dealt an irreparable blow to the world of anime-to-movie adaptations.

Dragon Ball Zis still ripe for a more faithful live-action movie adaptation. It has a massive fan base that would definitely show up if a more worthy adaptation was produced, andit’s a great story that deserves to find its way to an audience that might not give the original anime a chance. The previous film version was so poorly received that it’s unlikely Hollywood would take another stab at the property. But there’s one filmmaker out there who’s proven that he could do it justice.

Zack Snyder Would Be The Perfect Director For A Dragon Ball Z Live-Action Movie

Snyder’s flashy, bombastic filmmaking style is perfect for Dragon Ball Z

Zack Snyder would be a great candidate to directa live-action film adaptation ofDragon Ball Z. His next project,Twilight of the Gods, is an anime-style series based on Norse mythology, so he’s clearly interested in anime as a medium.Snyder’s over-the-top visuals, absurdly stylized action sequences, and focus on modern mythology have made all his films feel like live-action versions of animeeven when they have nothing to do with anime. WithSucker Punch, Snyder set out to bring the creative freedom of the anime realm into big-budget blockbuster filmmaking.

Whenever Snyder adapts a well-known I.P., his style is rarely well-suited to the material. He captured the imagery ofWatchmenbeautifully, but he missed the point of its anti-superhero satire. He captured the coolness of Batman, but he also made him a merciless mass murderer. ButDragon Ball Zis one property that might actually suit Snyder’s directorial sensibility.

Superman vs Zod in Man of Steel

Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel Battles Are The Closest Thing To Live-Action DBZ Fights

Superman’s fight with General Zod in Man of Steel is practically live-action DBZ

The Snyder movie that most proves he’s well-suited to a live-actionDragon Ball Zmovie isMan of Steel.Man of Steelplays more like aDragon Ball Zmovie than a Superman movie. The omniscient camera angles, dizzying cinematography, and stylized action ofMan of Steel’s superhuman smackdowns are the closest thing to a live-action translation of the fights fromDragon Ball Z. Superman and General Zod hurling each other across the Metropolis skyline might as well be a live-actionGoku vs. Vegetafight.
