Finding a great robot vacuum that can also mop your floors is not hard. But because most are in a round shape, it’s hard to keep corners clean. TheDreame X40 Ultramakes dirty corners a thing of the past. The robot combo offers extendable mop pads and side brush along with other spectacular features that help justify its high price.

Dreame X40 Ultra

The Dreame X40 is a top-notch robot mop/vaccum combo with a price to match. The vacuum offers up to 12,000Pa of suction, one of the strongest on the market. Dual mopping pads continuously rotate to help tackle difficult stains. The vacuum’s side brush will rotate out to tackle messes in corners while the mop pads can also extend out from the robot body to clean more stains.

Price and Availability

The Dreame X40 Ultra retails for $1,600 and is available through several retailers, including Amazon and Dreame.

Design and Unboxing

Getting up and running with the Dreame X40 Ultra was super easy and fast, by far the quickest setup of any robot vacuum I tested.

After removing the main base station from the box, you’ll take out the robot vacuum itself, snap on the mop pads, and plug in the base station. Then remove the clean water tank and fill it. Finally, add the included detergent to its own tank. You’ll be ready to go.

One of my only complaints about the X40 Ultra was the size of the base station. It’s almost two feet tall and 13 inches wide. verify you have a large enough space in your home for it to fit.

Even though the base station is larger than other options, the clean and dirty water can hold more than a gallon of liquid, which should help extend the time between refilling or dumping those containers.

The base station will also wash and dry the mopping pads to help fend off smells and bacteria. As an added plus that I’ve never seen in other models, the base station can also automatically clean the washboard where dirt and muck sometimes accumulate after cleaning the mop pads. With other vacuum/mop combos, you have to keep that area clean manually every week or two.

The detergent container and vacuum bag are accessible after removing a panel from the bottom of the base station. I wasn’t bothered about doing that since it’s not an area you will be regularly accessing.

Both the vacuum and base station are well-built and seem very sturdy, something I want to see in something as expensive as the X40 Ultra. The mostly black vacuum and base station features gold accents which looks nice and shouldn’t stand out in a home.

After downloading the Dreamehome companion app for iPhone or Android, you’ll go through a quick setup process, including connecting to your home Wi-Fi. The final part of the setup process is to complete a mapping run of your home. You’ll need to make sure that all doors to rooms are open and accessible and that most large obstacles are picked up. During the run, the vacuum uses its LiDAR sensor to make a map.

It took less than 10 minutes for the vacuum to make its mapping pass and provided a complete map of my home and even automatically customized it into different rooms. You can also use the app to further customize the map by editing rooms and adding features like a no-go zone.

A Vacuum that Makes Quick Work of Almost Anything

When looking at a robot vacuum and mop combo, I always like to look at both parts of the cleaning equation separately before seeing how the solution works together. The vacuum in the X40 Ultra sports a massive 12,000Pa of suction, one of the highest ratings on the market. And it definitely lived up to that mark.

With two dogs and a pair of teenagers, my floors are always in a constant state of dirty. I mostly have hard floors throughout my home with some rugs and a small bit of carpet in a closet. Every day, my flooring seems to attract dirt, dust, dog hair, and whatever else you can imagine.

dreame x40 ultra extendable mop

After a few passes, the X40 Ultra made quick work of it all. I was surprised at how much the vacuum was able to suck up, even in areas previous robot vacuums missed. One of the major reasons is the liftable and extendable side brush. Most robot vacuums have a side brush, but it only extends a bit from the circular vacuum.

Dreame’s option can extend much further out to tackle any right-angle corner. The corners in my home usually contain a mix of dust and dog hair. When the X40 Ultra reached the corner, the brush slid out and grabbed that dirt so the vacuum could take care of it. It also did a great job with my furniture legs as well, another sore spot with other vacuums.

There is a setting in the app to ensure the side brush extends as much as possible every time the vacuum is at work. This will affect battery life, but it’s well worth it for me.

Along with making short work of the everyday mess on my floor, I also tried out a mix of different debris like cereal and rice to see how the vacuum worked on hard surfaces and rugs, and it exceeded my expectations with 100 percent coverage of all the debris.

On the maximum suction level, the noise from the X40 Ultra wasn’t any more noticeable than other models I’ve tested.

Extendable Mop Pads Tackle Tough Spots

The mop of the X40 Ultra is another winner. Just like with the side brush, the dual mopping pads can extend out from the robot’s body to get more of your floor clean. You can also tweak its settings to clean low overhanging areas better, like the bottom of the refrigerator.

I was very pleased with the mop, especially in a number of areas other robots couldn’t touch, especially directly under couches and other furniture.

Even when the mopping pads weren’t extended, the mop did a nice job cleaning stubborn stains like dried milk or soy sauce. During some cleaning modes, you’re able to turn on a Stain Recognition function that will perform intensive mopping when specific stains are detected.

When done mopping, the mopping pads can be washed with hot water—up to 158 degrees Fahrenheit.

Especially if you have a lot of carpet in your home, mopping pads can sometimes cause damp areas when the robot switches modes. With the X40 Ultra, the mopping pads will automatically lift around half an inch when carpet is detected. But more impressively, if you just set a vacuum-only cleaning, the robot will detach the mopping pads in the dock.

While working, the robot uses AI to avoid obstacles found on floors like socks, dirty clothes, and dog toys. That worked extremely well. I’ve used the robot for more than a month, and it hasn’t gotten hung up a single time, even though I have a number of objects on the floor.

Loads of Features in the Great App

As a pet owner, I especially find robot vacuums/mops handy for tackling the mess of dirt and hair my beagles seem to bring inside constantly. The companion app features several pet-friendly features.

You can choose to have the robot take obstacle-avoidance actions more carefully and perform a smarter cleaning strategy around pet furniture. The smart strategy will deep clean around a pet bowl or cat litter box and avoid pee pads.

I enjoyed the app’s wide variety of features to enable. Most importantly, there are two major ways to clean the home. Along with a custom option where you can tweak settings like suction power, CleanGenius worked very well in my testing. That will intelligently change the cleaning modes and functions to match the room and how dirty it is.

The app is also the place to go to use the X40 Ultra’s live video camera. you’re able to use the app to pilot the robot to different part of your home for some extra-added security. One of the nicer features is the cruise function, which allows you to see multiple locations for the robot to go to instead of having to pilot it through your home. It obviously won’t take the place of an actual home security camera, but It’s nice to have in a pinch. I used it multiple times to make sure my dogs weren’t getting into any unsupervised trouble.

Should You Buy the Dreame X40 Ultra?

The most obvious issue with theDreame X40 Ultrais its eye-watering $1,600 price. Even though it provided the best mop and vacuum experience of any robot I’ve used, that comes at a high cost.

If you have the cash, Dreame’s technology does everything and more that it promises. The extendable mop pads and side brush along with the massive suction power and other great features make it well worth the price.

For anyone who doesn’t want to spend that much on a robot, the good news is that you easily find units for half the price that can do almost as well to keep your floors clean. But if you want the best, Dreame has you covered.
