Summary
According to an MCU producer, fakeMarvel Cinematic Universeleaks were invented forDeadpool & Wolverinein order to preserve the biggest surprises of the film. One of the most highly-anticipated MCU movies of all time for the last few years has beenDeadpool & Wolverine, which will bring Ryan Reynolds back as Wade Wilson and into Marvel’s central cinematic universe. Like most MCU films and TV shows, spoilers and leaks are something that Marvel Studios have been trying to keep under wraps ahead oftheDeadpool & Wolverinerelease.
In a new interview withGamesRadar,Deadpool & Wolverineproducer Wendy Jacobson was asked about the many cameos that have been reported for the Phase 5 film. While Jacobson, who also worked onShe-Hulk: Attorney at Law, didn’t reveal too much, she confirmed that there were fake leaks made in order to protect as many of the big secrets inDeadpool & Wolverineas possible, sharing the following:

there may or may not have been some subterfuge and misdirections on the internet or in-person in order to protect the secrecy… I can neither confirm nor deny any cameos in this film but I will say, in terms of characters that may or may not appear, it was always important to us that nothing in this movie feels like a gimmick. Anyone showing up has a crucial story purpose or a beginning, middle, and end as a character arc. It was definitely a collaborative process of seeing who fit in and who didn’t.
Every Deadpool Variant Confirmed To Appear In Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool & Wolverine is dealing heavily with the MCU multiverse, likely prompting several variants of the Merc with a Mouth to appear in the film.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s Cameo Reveals Explain Why The MCU Wanted To Protect Them So Much
Deadpool & Wolverineis more or less set to serve as a finale totheX-Menmovie timelinefollowing Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which is how Marvel Studios now finally has the character rights back. As Wade makes the jump over to the MCU,Deadpool & Wolverineis, understandably, wanting to pay homage to the franchise it originated from, which includes cameos and major character returns. Even though they haven’t put all of their cards on the table yet, Marvel Studios have still been willing to unveil a number of familiar faces coming back forDeadpool & Wolverine.
Given how major these revealed returns are, it makes perfect sense that there would be efforts to ensure the biggest reveals ofDeadpool & Wolverinewere kept under wraps with efforts like the creation of fake leaks. Since preventing the flow of any information is a far harder task, ensuring some other untrue rumors and reveals are circulating makes it harder for any actual leaked information to appear concrete, helping Marvel ensure audiences are as surprised as possible by whatever the movie itself has in store.

While a handful of cameos have been officially confirmed for the Phase 5 installment, time will tell who else may or may not show up inDeadpool & Wolverine. AsDeadpool & Wolverineopens in theaters this week, it will be exciting to see how much else those involved were able to keep from being spoiled.
