Speaking with @seasonedbf, Washington sheds light on his recent comments about retiring. The actor first started by clarifying that he “didn’t say that [he] was going into retirement.” Instead,Washington is planning to slow down his careerso that he only takes on projects he is interested in. He also is “more interested in getting behind the camera.” Specifically, Washington said that he is “less interested in running and jumping” in this stage of his career. He wants to let the younger actors do that legwork. Check out the full quote from Washington below:

I didn’t say that I was going to go into retirement. I said that it has to be a level of interest to me. I’m more interested in getting behind the camera. So that’s about 5 years out. You know, it’s very difficult and I may have used the word retire, but I look at life in three sections. You learn, you earn, and you return. I’m in the return part of life. And it’s also informed by, and even the interview that I did has been informed since by me going on tour for three weeks with my sons and my daughters.

And now going on tour with Paul and Fred. They’re taking over. You know. I’m not retiring. It’s not like ‘okay on June 5, that’s it.’ But to think I’m going to run as far as they are or as your are, I’d be a fool. And I think that’s the ego that thinks ‘oh yeah, I can do it.’ No you can’t, no you can’t, your stuntman is doing it now. So I’m less interested and running and jumping. You let Paul and John David run and jump. And to think ‘oh, I can still do it,’ you’re a fool. And I don’t want to be foolish.

What This Means For Washington’s Career

Washington Is Not Done Yet

The actor’s clarifying statement comes after comments from just earlier this week that led to the assumption thatWashington’s careerwould be ending soon. In an interview withToday, Washington mentioned that he doesn’t know “how many more films [he’s] going to make.” He mentioned several projects that he has upcoming, includingOthelloandKing Learand then said that “after that [he’s] going to retire.” His most recent comments suggest that this merely meant thathe will be more selective about his projects, and not that his retirement is imminent.

Washington’s statement about wanting to do more work behind the camera could have a tangible impact on his upcoming projects. The Hollywood star has directed and produced films before, so any of these career options could be tangible moving forward. Previously, Washington had revealed his involvement in developing a film adaptation of the August Wilson playJoe Turner’s Come and Gone. His exact role in the project has yet to be confirmed, but Washington’s recent statement indicates he may not have an acting role in the movie.

Our Take On Washington’s Career Statement

This Will Still Be A Change For Washington

Though it is good to know that Washington’s career is not ending any time soon, this news still changes the nature of the actor’s work. Washington has been in a lot of different types of projects over the years, but action has been a huge part of that. In recent years, the action prowess of aging actors such as Tom Cruise has really been emphasized and praised in the media.Washingtonhimself seems disinterested in this trend, instead wanting to choose roles that he is best suited for in his septuagenarian state.
