The originalStar Warstrilogy only mentions the Clone Wars in passing, but the conflict plays a huge role in one of the manyStar Warsshows that expand the timeline. While the clones might have appeared at first to be interchangeable pawns in the Republic’s army just like the Stormtroopers that Star Wars had already introduced,Star Wars: The Clone Warschanged all that. Despite having the same DNA, the clones each have their own unique personalities. Most of the Jedi generals formed very close relationships with the clones in their squadron, including Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
When the Jedi were slaughtered inOrder 66, the clones at first simply appeared to be double agents carrying out Palpatine’s orders.Star Wars: The Clone Warsreveals that things were actually much more complicated. The addition of an inhibitor chip that overrides their actions explains how they could betray the Jedi they were so close with. Suddenly their unwilling betrayal becomes incredibly painful, turning the clones on people who trusted them.
