He went on to retell an anecdote about Renner standing up and moving around only 90 days after his accident. Handley said that “recovery was just exponential from there” because Renner is so “strong-willed” and thus able to make the recovery happen. Check out the full quote from Handley below:

Well, it was very emotional but at the same time it was very inspiring. In the middle of his recovery, I got to see him a few times and hang out with him. And I never forget, it was about 90 days out from his accident and I was over at his house and we were hanging out and some weights came to the front door. He had ordered some weights and he was sitting at the couch and we were chatting and then the weights came in. And so I was like, “Oh, I’ll move the weights inside.” So I go to move the weights inside and I’m opening up the weights. So I was like, I can put these together. And all of a sudden he’s standing up and I’m behind. I’m like, “What are you doing standing up? This is crazy.” And then he starts putting the weights together and he starts lifting the weights and it’s like 90 days out from that.
And so from then on I was like, oh. And just knowing him and his mindset and how he’s not one to let anything get him down I was like, oh, we are golden. And to me, I don’t know, it seemed like the just recovery was just exponential from there. He had great care and he’s just really strong-willed and made it happen. And that’s why it was so inspiring. And I’ll say this, it was a year year from when it happened to when we were shooting. Any other person, I don’t know. But he is a marvel, no doubt.
