In A Violent Nature Proved Divisive, But It Didn’t Skimp On The Gore
How Can A Sequel Up The Ante?
Nearly all ofIn A Violent Nature’s 94-minute runtime is spent with Johnnyas he stalks the woods he’s seemingly haunted for years. Little backstory is given to Johnny — much is inferred, and his story follows a similar archetype to that ofJason Voorhees, but he serves as a stand-in for many iconic slasher villains. Even less context is given to Johnny’s victims — most of them are seen in brief moments having clipped conversations before they are brutally dispatched by Johnny.
Every Kill From In A Violent Nature, Ranked By Brutality
In A Violent Nature has some pretty horrifying death scenes, with the goriest standing up against anything from previous horror films.
Without a character to grow fond of,the film becomes an exercise in patience and a meditation on evil. It’s alsosuperviolent: one of Johnny’s goriest kills involves him pulling someone’s head through their stomach. The sequel will have to pull out all the stops to top these kills, which are made even more excruciating in the way the film lingers in each scene.

In A Violent Nature’s endingleaves things open-ended, with the possibility of a final girl’s return and Johnny’s whereabouts unknown. Whether the follow-up will stick to the first movie’s format or break formula and integrate more interpersonal stories remains to be seen, but if anything, it seemsthe series should continue to test the boundaries of the horror genre rather than fall back into familiar territory.
