Summary

Previously, Netflix’s live-action adaptation ofOne Piecehinted that a key storyline would appear in season 2 — and now it’s finally confirmed. Although it seemed like the series was positioned to skip over the Loguetown arc in the wake ofOne Pieceseason 1’s ending, the adaptation’s showrunner has clarified thatthe Straw Hats, led by Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), will make landfall in the iconic location. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s bestselling manga series,One Piecefollows in the footsteps of the long-running anime, once again chronicling Luffy’s journey to become the King of the Pirates.

To the relief of fans,One Pieceseason 2 has debunked worriesabout the series skipping over the Loguetown arc. Thereveal ofOne Pieceseason 2’s premiere title, “The Beginning & The End,” has confirmed Loguetown’s inclusion. InOne Piecefranchise lore,Loguetown is nicknamed “the town of the beginning and the end"for its connections to former Pirate King Gol D. Roger. Although Netflix’sOne Piecedid the so-called “barrel scene” — one ofOne Piece’s most heartwarming scenes— before Loguetown, the series will seemingly continue its trend of remaining (mostly) faithful to its source material.

One Piece Season 2’s Gold Roger Return Confirms We’re Getting Loguetown

Gol D. Roger Has Many Ties To The Iconic One Piece Location

With production onOne Pieceseason 2well underway, it has been confirmed thatMichael Dorman will reprise his season-one role, returning for the sophomore outing as legendary pirate Gold Roger. Gol D. Roger, who more commonly goes by the moniker Gold Roger, served as the captain of the Roger Pirates and heldOne Piece’s titular treasure. Responsible for kicking off the Golden Age of Pirates, Gold Roger conquered the Grand Line and amassed a staggering fortune. Throughout the anime and manga, Luffy is often compared to Gol D. Roger, and it’s clear that the young captain admires Roger.

…the former King of the Pirates was both born and executed in Loguetown.

That said, Dorman’s return as Gold Roger suggests the series will return to Loguetown — both in the past and present. Loguetown’s nickname, “the town of the beginning and the end,” is actually a reference to Roger’s life story, as the former King of the Pirates was both born and executed in Loguetown. Since Gol D. Roger’s death was chronicled inOne Piece’s first outing,it seems like the second season will feature Dorman’s Gold Roger in flashback sequences. Since Luffy is followingGol D. Roger’s legacy,One Piecewill likely showcase the parallels between the two pirates' stories.

Why Loguetown Is Such An Important Arc In One Piece

Loguetown Also Serves A Practical Purpose In One Piece’s World

Conveniently situated on a stretch of the East Blue, Loguetown is the go-to town for pirate ships looking to make a final supply run before weathering the Grand Line. Functionally speaking, it’s an important stop, but it also serves key narrative and world-building purposes. The crucial Grand Line waypoint allowsOne Pieceto explore Gol D. Roger’s backstory more deeply. In the source material, it’s also where Luffy first realizes there’s a bounty on his head. That said, havingOne Piece’s cast of charactersregroup in Loguetown is a great way to kick offOne Pieceseason 2.

As the final stop before the Grand Line, Loguetown is an arc of transition forOne Piece. It marks the end of the East Blue Saga and the beginning of the Arabasta Saga, after which the anime is never the same again. As great asOne Pieceseason 1 was, the Netflix show has barely scratched the potential of the source material. The bestOne Piecestories are yet to come, and while the East Blue is a very nostalgic portion of the anime, the Grand Line is where the adventure begins.

What Happens During Loguetown In One Piece

Luffy Runs Into Old & New Faces In Loguetown

Loguetown marks the calm before the storm for Luffy and his friends as each of the Strae Hat pirates goes into their own little adventures as they prepare to enter the Grand Line. Although much of the Loguetown arc in the anime consists of filler, it also includes some very important storylines and character interactions. Firstly,Buggy and Alvida team upto get revenge on Luffy. Considering that bothBuggy the Clown and Captain Alvida are confirmed to returninOne Pieceseason 2, it is safe to say they will be at Loguetown looking for Luffy.

Luffy’s encounter with Buggy and Alvida is hilarious, especially because he does not really see them as a threat. For all the comedy that comes with this part of the story, there is also a level of seriousness brought by Smoker. The White Hunter stops at nothing to find and capture Luffy, thus becoming a great antagonist. Given thatSmoker appeared inOne Piece’s post-credits scene, the character is expected to play a significant role in season 2. Loguetown also sees the introduction of Tashigi, whose casting may reignite an old fan theory about Kuina inOne Piece.

One Pieceseason 1 did not include the adventures of “chibi Buggy” and skipped to his encounter with Alvida.

While Luffy running away from old and new enemies is a lot of fun, the most important thing about Loguetown is the history that comes with it. It is unclear how much of Gold Roger’s pastOne Pieceseason 2 will show, but there should be at least one flashback sequence during the Loguetown episodes. It would be interesting to include the bar scene, which only exists in the anime, into the show as a way to reveal more about the late King of the Pirates without too much exposition. Additionally,Loguetown is whenOne Pieceintroduces Luffy’s father.

One Piece Season 2 Will Change Drastically After Loguetown

One Piece Only Gets Better After They Enter The Grand Line

One Pieceseason 1 had a very clear structure in which each pair of episodes was dedicated to introducing a new member of Luffy’s crew as he would go from island to island making new friends. Although this is technically what happens in virtually everyOne Piecesaga, the stakes increase massively once the Straw Hats enter the Grand Line.Curiously, the scene fromOne Pieceseason 1’s finale where all the main characters announce their dreams happens after the Loguetown arc in the source material.

It will be a bit strange seeing Loguetown after the Straw Hats have already done the iconic barrel scene ahead of their journey into the Grand Line. Still, assuming thatOne Piecewill not spend more than two episodes in Loguetown, season 2 should pick up steam very fast. The Arabasta Saga consists of five arcs, all of which have major repercussions on the overarching story and introduce important characters. For example, Reverse Mountain sees the arrival of Princess Vivi, whereas Nico Robin should debut during the Whisky Peak episodes. After Loguetown, the crew will only get bigger.
