Despite being the company’s first foldable, the OnePlus Open impressed us in almost every way when it first dropped in 2023. Its large displays and square design make using the phone a breeze, whether closed or open. Meanwhile, excellent multitasking features in OxygenOS allow you to use the big inner folding screen to its potential and boost your productivity while on the go. Even today, it ranks amongour favorite foldables, even surpassing recent releases from companies like Samsung.
It’s been well over a year since the OnePlus Open first debuted, but in 2025, we’re finally expecting to see its successor hit the market. Curious about what might make the OnePlus Open 2 so slick? Here’s everything we know so far about the company’s upcoming second-gen foldable.

OnePlus Open 2: Design and specs
Perhaps owing to the fact that OnePlus has a smaller profile than companies like Samsung or Google, it’s taken us ages to get a good glimpse at what the brand’s next-gen foldable might look like. Thankfully, just as 2024 wrapped up,the leak community delivered. While these renders aren’t necessarily final — their source refers to them as a “final-stage prototype” — it does give us our first look at what’s next for the Open series. Despite the wait, though, these images are probably exactly what you would’ve imagined.
These renders show a near-identical layout for both the phone’s back and its main foldable display. From the Hasselblad-branded camera module and flash placement to the punchout selfie cam and nearly square aspect ratio, this device could easily be mistaken for a new OnePlus Open colorway, similar to the crimson Apex Edition model launched in August of 2024. Really, the only notable change seems to be the black glass finish; the original Open came in a black faux-leather finish and a green glass finish.

In fact, this image fails to answer the biggest question surrounding the Open 2: its thickness. The Open was fairly slim among its competitors when it launched in October of 2023, but compared to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold — not to mention several China-exclusive foldables from companies like Huawei — it’s pretty chunky. The Open 2 will undoubtedly be thinner than its predecessor, but until we get a glimpse of the phone’s profile, it’s hard to say. Remember, the OnePlus Open 2 will also launch as the Oppo Find N5 in China, likely weeks before it hits North American shores, which should give us a better idea of the device’s design.
Older leaks from 2024 has OnePlus besting both Samsung and Google’s thinnest foldables, making for the thinnest folding phone in the US. We’ll have to wait and see where the financial dimensions finally hit, but sub-10mm would be a huge win.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the OnePlus Open 2 will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, the chipmaker’s latest and greatest.Rumors report it’ll be the first US-centric foldable to use it, suggesting a launch prior to Samsung’s usual July time slot. We also expect the OnePlus Open 2 to include 12GB or 16GB of RAM — plenty of power for multitasking. And with the OnePlus Open 2, the company might source a newer external panel from its supplier with higher peak brightness and better efficiency.
Wireless charging was one of the biggest missing components with the original model. However, both the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 13 ship with wireless charging, suggesting OnePlus may add this convenient way of charging to its second foldable. Considering the company launched Qi2-compatible cases with the OnePlus 13 in China, it’s possible the OnePlus Open 2’s default case also includes full magnetic support.

According to some reports, OnePlus plans to incorporate itsGlacier Battery technologyinto the OnePlus Open 2, giving it a nearly 6,000mAh cell. That’s a significant increase in size, and we expect the OnePlus Open 2 to outperform other folding phones in terms of battery life. In October, we learned thedevice could sport a 5,700mAh cell— plenty of power for an all-day experience.
Should you buy the OnePlus Open now, or wait for the OnePlus Open 2?

OnePlus Open 2: Software
Besides the excellent hardware, the OnePlus Open was a joy to use because of some of the modifications made to OxygenOS. With any luck, the company could take things up a notch with the OnePlus Open 2. After a longer-than-expected delay, Android 14 arrived on the original Open in March 2024, andwe were pleasantly surprisedby how much it added to the experience. From new features like File Dock to improved methods for extracting text and images, OxygenOS 14 brings plenty to the table, and all of it will be on the Open 2 by default.
The OnePlus Open 2 will also deliver a suite of AI features, though we don’t know the specifics. The company recently announced aMagic Eraser clone for existing hardware, while promising additional tools to arrive in the future. OxygenOS 15 made AI a front-and-center sort of thing,

Longer software support would help the Open 2 stand out from other foldables. Google raised the bar with the Pixel 8 in 2023 by promising seven years of OS and security updates, something Samsung matched in turn. That’s three more years of OS updates over the OnePlus Open. OnePlus doesn’t need to surpass Google’s promised update schedule with its second foldable. The company only needs to match it. We’d be surprised for OnePlus to extend its support that far out, though — the brand has always lagged in this regard.
OnePlus Open 2: Cameras
Despite not packing the biggest camera sensors, the OnePlus Open featured the best cameras on a foldable when it launched. That meant you could take great pictures with its massive display without any tradeoffs. There were some processing issues, but OnePlus quickly resolved them with software updates.
We don’t have the complete picture, but we heard thatOnePlus will include a 50MP primary sensoron the OnePlus Open 2, although exact specs on the other lenses aren’t available. The addition of AI could help further, as the phone could fine-tune the colors, contrast, and processing based on the scene you’re trying to capture.
OnePlus Open 2: Price and release date
The OnePlus Open debuted in late October 2023 after months of an apparent delay related to its display sourcing. While it would’ve been great to see a successor in 2024 to rival the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it never came.
Now, as 2025 rolls on, the OnePlus Open 2 seems all but certain to arrive sometime soon. Most of the rumors circle around a March 2025 release date, allowing it to be the first Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered foldable launched stateside. The Oppo Find N5 — its sibling model in China — has already seen certification, suggesting that this device is about ready for prime-time. And yet, one rumor right at the tail end of 2024 suggested a later launch, landing sometime in the second half of 2025. Expect to see this phonesometimethis year; as for specifics, we’ll have to keep waiting.
OnePlus has always been aggressive on its pricing, often undercutting the competition by some margin. We won’t know for sure for some time, but we expect the OnePlus Open 2 to be priced slightly cheaper than theGoogle Pixel 9 Pro FoldandSamsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, especially since Samsung and Google kept such steep pricing for their folding phones again in 2024.
The OnePlus Open 2 could face stiff competition from Samsung
When it releases early in 2025, the OnePlus Open 2 will face stiff competition. Samsung has a Galaxy Z Fold 7 on the way sometime in the summer, and Google will have had some lead time to improve itsPixel 9 Pro Fold. Either way, if OnePlus delivers as it did on the original Open, the Open 2 will again be the folding phone to beat in 2025.
