Samsung’s 2024 Flip foldable is finally here. The foldable market has matured over the last few years, but Samsung continues to rule the segment despite stiff competition. The Galaxy Z Flip is a key reason behind that, with its relatively affordable price point and stunning design helping attract first-time buyers. With the Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung is addressing some longtime issues with its flip foldable, including battery life and sub-par imaging performance.

While there are many more flip foldable phones on the market than before, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 remains the folding phone to buy for around $1,000. Read below to know everything about Samsung’s 2024 flip foldable.

Review: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 is great but it’s no longer the slam dunk foldable choice

The best one yet, but is that good enough?

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Availability and price

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 was available for preorder immediately after the company’s Unpacked event on July 10. Retail availability is scheduled for two weeks later, starting July 24.

Despite packing modest upgrades, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 costs $100 more than the Flip 5 — just like theleaks had predicted. Its pricing starts from $1,100 for the 256GB model. If you order the phone directly from Samsung, you will get a free year of Samsung Care+ coverage. Plus, if you put in your preorder by July 23, Samsung will double the storage and give you up to $1,000 off on your purchase with an eligible trade-in.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Design and specs

Samsung is not reinventing the wheel with the Galaxy Z Flip 6. It retains the same design as its predecessor, which we sawcourtesy of leaked rendersback in February 2024. So, you get an expansive 3.4" AMOLED panel on the front and a 6.7" 120Hz folding inner screen. But don’t be fooled by the outer appearance, as there are other improvements. Samsung claims to use “enhanced Armor Aluminum” on its newest flip foldable for better durability. The hinge is also more durable and can withstand external shocks.

More importantly, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the first in the Flip lineup to feature IP48 certification, ensuring it provides limited protection against solid dust ingress and water resistance.True to leaks, Samsung is launching the Flip 6 in a multitude of colors, including Mint, Yellow, and Blue, which help it stand out. There are other Samsung-exclusive colors, too. Barring the new shades, though, it’s hard to tell the Z Flip 6 apart from the Flip 5.

Like before, you can use the Flex Window on the Flip 6 to access widgets and run third-party apps through Good Lock. Like theMoto Razr+ (2024), we wish Samsung had also provided Gemini access through the cover display.

Samsung says it uses “enhanced layers” on the inner folding screen to reduce the crease visibility and improve durability. This fits previous rumors of the Korean companyusing a thicker 50-micron Ultra Thin Glasson its 2024 foldables.

Thankfully, all the rumors aboutSamsung switching to an Exynos SoC on the Z Flip 6were inaccurate. The company is sticking to Qualcomm’s flagshipSnapdragon 8 Gen 3chip with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. For better thermal cooling, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 sports a vapor chamber — a first in the Flip lineup.

Besides the usual yearly improvements, the Z Flip 6 packs a bigger 4,000mAh cell. This should help increase the phone’s runtime by a few hours, helping address a longstanding issue of sub-par battery life of Samsung’s Flip foldables. The bummer is that Samsung is sticking to 25W charging speeds for another year.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Software

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 runs on One UI 6.1.1 and Android 14 out of the box. While a minor point release of One UI 6, the new release of Samsung’s software skin packs minor usability improvements. It also packs Galaxy AI integration and its suite of features with free access available until the end of 2025.

Some new AI features include Photo Ambient, which can automatically change the wallpaper in real time based on the time and weather; Live Translate, Instant Slow-mo, Circle to Search, etc. Flex Window is also gaining support for additional new widgets. With Suggested replies, it can provide context-specific reply suggestions to messages right from the cover display.

Like theGalaxy S24 series, Samsung promises seven years of OS updates and security patches for its 2024 flip foldable.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: Cameras

Samsung foldables don’t pack the same impressive cameras as the company’s flagship smartphone. While the Galaxy Z Flip 6 does little to change that notion, it packs one key upgrade. Asrumors had indicated, Samsung’s 2024 flip foldable packs a new 50MP primary camera — up from the 12MP shooter found on previous Z Flip models.

While it uses pixel binning to output 12.5MP photos, Samsung claims the images it captures are more detailed and contain less noise. The higher resolution allows the phone to support a claimed 2x optical and 10x digital zoom. Other claimed improvements include better low-light pictures and superior video HDR. A new Auto Zoom feature will automatically keep you in the center and frame a shot when using FlexCam.

The 12MP ultrawide and 10MP f/2.2 selfie camera remain unchanged, though they should feature processing improvements.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the flip foldable to beat

There are some great alternatives to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 from Chinese Android smartphone makers. But if you want a flip foldable, there are hardly any options better than the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Despite the higher price tag, the phone packs almost everything you can ask for, with the improved camera and battery life addressing some longstanding shortcomings of the lineup.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is Samsung’s most evolved take yet on the flip-style foldable form factor. Its 3.4-inch AMOLED cover screen supports Galaxy AI features without opening the device, along with upgraded widgets and suggested replies, but its gorgeous 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED folding display will still have you flipping the phone open quite a bit.
