Summary
Star Trek: Strange New Worldsseason 3 is set to reintroduce Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (Martin Quinn) as a main character, but he won’t be Chief Engineer. After his surprise appearance inStrange New Worlds' season 2’s ending, theStrange New Worldspanel at San Diego ComicCon confirmed that Scotty will be playing a much bigger role in season 3 as a series regular. This was backed up by a clip from season 3 that showed Quinn’s Scotty manning the transporter to beam down some newly Vulcanized members of the crew for an away mission.
As Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, and one of themain characters ofStar Trek: The Original Series, Scotty is a truly iconic part ofStar Trek. James Doohan and Simon Pegg’s portrayals of the charactersset a wonderful precedent for Quinn to add his own flare inStrange New Worldsseason 3. Given the show’s track record for expanding and improvingTOScharacters, Scotty is in good hands with Quinn and the creative team. However, before the franchise can again feature Scotty in his role as Enterprise Engineer, it must first depict him in a different job.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Adds TOS Character To Main Cast
Following a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Strange New Worlds has confirmed that a beloved Star Trek: TOS character will join season 3’s cast.
Strange New Worlds Season 3 Gives Scotty His Old Star Trek: TOS Job
Scotty’s back in the transporter room in Strange New Worlds season 3
Based on thesneak peek ofStrange New Worldsseason 3 from SDCC, Scotty will be operating as Transporter Chief during the new season, mirroring his first job onThe Original Series. In earlyTOSepisodes, Scotty was often seen manning the transporter rather than in Engineering, beaming crew members to and from various planets or ships on away missions.Scotty’s operation of the transporter became a fairly iconic part ofTOS, even giving rise to the catchphrase “Beam me up, Scotty,“which has become widely used in popular culture outside theStar Trekfanbase.
Although “Beam me up, Scotty” is attributed toStar Trek: The Original Series, the exact phrase is a misquotation and was never actually said in an episode. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and other characters had similar lines, but the iconic phrase itself was never uttered.

Now,Strange New Worldsseems to be paying tribute to Scotty’s original role by having him as the Enterprise’s new Transporter Chief.Since Scotty wasn’t shown in an Engineering role until a little way intoTOS’s run, it makes sense not to promote him right away, asStrange New Worldsis firmly a prequel toTOS. Commander Pelia (Carol Kane) will continue in her role as Chief Engineer during season 3. However, it will be interesting to see what kinds of duties Scotty takes on besides the transporter, and ifStrange New Worldswill foreshadow his future role.
What Scotty Means For Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Transporter Chiefs
Will Mr. Kyle reappear in future Strange New Worlds episodes?
However, Scotty moving into the Transporter Chief position means thatStrange New Worlds' previous chiefs may not appear in season 3. InStrange New Worldsseason 1, the transporter was manned byMr. Kyle (André Dae Kim) who was a minor character inStar Trek: TOSas well. Season 2 saw the job pass to a completely new Transporter Chief, andnow it seems that Scotty may be taking over the role indefinitely given his series regular status.
Star Trek: Strange New Worldsgiving Scotty the Transporter Chief role not only pays tribute to James Doohan’s version of the character but also allows Scotty to be involved in any number of important scenes throughout the season.

Scotty stepping into the role likely signals that Kyle and season 2’s Transporter Chief are out, although the fact that Kyle is also aTOScharacter may indicate that they will rotate the position. Either way,Star Trek: Strange New Worldsgiving Scotty the Transporter Chief role not only pays tribute to James Doohan’s version of the character but also allows Scotty to be involved in any number of important scenes throughout the season. Now that he’s a series regular,Scotty has the chance to shine on the show with his new, or arguably old, role.
