Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Silo season 2 finale.
Siloshowrunner Graham Yost explains how the show’s darkly lit scenes will be improved on in season 3. Critics’reviews forSiloseason 2were overwhelmingly positive, leading to a 96% Tomatometer score onRotten Tomatoes. However, one frequent criticism of the Apple TV+ series is how darkly lit many scenes are, which can make it difficult to watch at times. This is largely due to the nature of a story that takes place almost entirely in underground silos.

During a conversation withTVLine,Yost shares that the lighting will be better inSiloseason 3. This improvement is rooted in more of the story taking place in outside locations, as season 3’s flashbacks reveal what happened that led to the creation of the silos. Yost did clarify that“We do go back to Silo 17”in season 3 and to"remember, they’ve got a very big power issue there, so they don’t have a lot of light.”He also recommends viewers to turn up the brightness of their televisions when watching the series. Check out his comments below:
I met someone at the Austin Television Festival, who was doing a show in England, and I said, “Do you have a good location scout, a good locations' person?” And she looked at me and said, “Locations? InSilo??” I said, “Locations, inSilo.” So yes, we will be outdoors, and we will be in the world, and there will be sunshine.

Listen, I’m not going to defend it. It’s just the way it plays. And sometimes stuff looks one way in a dark editing room. When we showed the first episode on a big screen in London, it lookedfantastic, because motion picture screens are very bright. So I just encourage everyone to crank up the brightness [at home], and you’ll see a difference.
What This Means For Silo
Brightly Lit Scenes Can Benefit Silo In Multiple Ways
Yost’s comments are promising forSiloseason 3. It will berefreshing to see more scenes taking place outside and to be brightly lit, which will make for an easier viewing experience. Getting to experience the beauty and brightness of the natural world will also be tragic while knowing that this has been taken away from Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and the rest of theSilocharacters due to the choices made by others centuries before they were born.
Silo Timeline Explained: When The Apple TV+ Show Takes Place
Although many aspects of Apple TV+’s Silo remain unknown, the show has dropped subtle clues and details to reveal when the show’s events take place.
Themention of Silo 17 is also compelling, as it confirms that there is more story to be told there, and that Solo/Jimmy Conroy (Steve Zahn) and the other survivors Juliette met and helped are poised to return. The darker scenes there are justified as there is a narrative reason for them, given Silo 17’s lack of power. AfterSiloseason 2’s ending, Juliette can be the bridge between Silo 18 and Silo 17, and use her home’s resources to help the characters she met in season 2.

Our Take On Graham Yost’s Comments
The Brighter Scenes Will Be A Welcome Change
Television series and movies being too visually dark has become an increasing issue. Thepremise ofSiloand the limitations of the underground settings make the issue more understandablethan it is for other series and movies. Nevertheless, it is still good to know that it will not be as prevalent due to narrative changes in season 3. Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman, who made their series debut inSiloseason 2’s finale flashback, are now series regulars, and many of their scenes will likely take place during the day, which will be a welcome change for the series.
