Summary
LongtimeDCactor Tom Welling opens up on what is going on with theSmallvillesequel series. Since its conclusion in 2011, there has always been the hope thattheSmallvillecastwould come back in another continuation of this take on the Superman mythology. While a live-action revival may not be in the cards for the foreseeable future, Welling has been working on a pitch for an animatedSmallvilleTV show with his co-star Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor.
As Welling recently appeared at Terrificon (viaFandom Spotlite,) theSmallvillestar finally gave a new update on the animated series and what is going on with the potential revival. While they are waiting for Warner Bros. to give them the greenlight, Welling stressed that they are ready, sharing the following:

We’ve already got an artist and we have a poster and we haven’t been able to share it yet but [it is] like Lionel Luthor looming over everybody and it’s really cool. But we can’t do anything without DC saying we can do it. They just haven’t given us the green light, but we’re ready. Al and Miles, who wrote Smallville, want to write it, but It’s not our property until they say we can do it.
Smallville Has 3 Perfect Ways Of Continuing Superman’s Story 13 Years After The DC Show Ended

What Other Smallville Actors Have Said About The Animated TV Show
Earlier in 2024,Screen RantinterviewedRosenbaum about hisSmallvillelegacywhile also getting a few updates from him about the animated sequel. Rosenbaum stated,“All I could share is that it’s a great idea. We have Al and Miles, the creators of Smallville backing us up.“The DC star also stressed that"when it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this; pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time.”
Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane onSmallville, gave a brief comment back in May 2022 about the potential animated show. The actress stated that"I know that it’s still in the process, the guys will let me know when I’m to step in, and in what capacity,“seemingly confirming that she is on board to reprise the role for the hypothetical revival. This would come a couple of years after Durance appeared alongside Welling in the Arrowverse crossoverCrisis on Infinite Earths.

Given the massive popularity behindSmallville, it would be shocking if DC Studios never looked into exploring the show again as part of their Elseworlds banner. While the main focus is obviously onJames Gunn’s DC Universe, having a huge IP likeSmallvilleas an Elseworlds product would also show how DC Studios can balance having both an interconnected franchise and these other projects that can stand on their own. Hopefully, theSmallvilleanimated show will get closer to finally becoming a reality.
