NBC’s uproarious new comedy seriesSt. Denis Medicaltakes viewers into the world of a woefully underfunded hospital, and now the mockumentary will return for a second season. Created for the small screen by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer,St. Denis Medicalfollows in the tradition ofThe Officeand concerns the staff of a hospital in Oregon as their day-to-day activities are being recorded by a documentary crew. Though hardly the first series to spoof the high-tension world of medicine,St. Denis Medicaldeftly uses the mockumentary format to add new wrinkles to classic hospital humor.

Early reviews praisedSt. Denis Medicalfor distancing itself fromThe Office, despite being in the same popular sub-genre of comedy that has spawned other hits likeAbbott Elementary. This unique approach to the familiar is perhaps the show’s strongest aspect, and it is just recognizable enough to grab regular audiences while still adding something new and avoiding staleness. Competition on networks like NBC is often very fierce, andSt. Denis Medicalhas already scored a season 2 renewal order from the network.

Expect The Doctors & Staff Of St. Denis To Return

Mockumentary TV comediesdon’t always follow the cliche sitcom formula to the letter, but they are similar in that they usually retain cast members from season to season. In order to build upon the humorous setups throughout season 1,it’s expected that the entire ensemble will return for the sophomore outing. That means the heart of the floor’s nursing staff, Alex, will once again be played by Allison Tolman. Joining her will be former surgeon-turned-executive Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) who can’t help but meddle in the medical side of the hospital.

TV shows that fall within the sitcom genre always hit home with critics and audiences, but some fly under the radar even though they’re great.

Elsewhere, comedy icon David Allan Grier should return as the grumpy senior physician, Ron, while Josh Lawson will play the surgeon seeking validation, Bruce. Kahyun Kim plays wild travel nurse, Serena, and she’ll likely find her way back to St. Denis in season 2 as well. So will Mekki Leeper’s nurse Matt, a newcomer who is still trying to adjust to the outside world after leaving his religious community in Montana. Veteran nurse Val (Kaliko Kauahi) will also be back on hand to lend her expertise with a lot of sass.

More Medical Hijinks Are Expected

At this early stage in the show’s run, it’s unclear if the opening season will introduce a few ongoing threads that could pay off over the long run. Predecessors likeThe OfficeandAbbott Elementaryfound great success when balancing the usual humorous shenanigans with a few interesting drama threads that make the characters more compelling as their relationships grow and change.St. Denis Medicalwill certainly find those moments eventually, but there’s nothing available to speculate about.

However, the one thing that can be expected fromSt. Denis Medicalseason 2 is even more wacky humor set within the hospital walls. The medical profession presents endless challenges for the characters, especially in an underfunded facility like St. Denis. Whatever happens in the sophomore outing, its expected that the gang will encounter strange medical mishaps, legal red tape, and plenty of executive interference as the administrative side tries in vain to get involved with the day-to-day operations of the hospital.
