Summary

Ranzar Malk’s gang is a vital part ofThe Mandalorianseason 1, episode 6 “Chapter 6: The Prisoner,” which introduced plenty of familiar faces to theStar Warsgalaxy. The gang is a group of mercenaries fromDin Djarin’s past who he approaches for a job opportunity while on the run from both the Bounty Hunters Guild and the Imperial Remnant. Once led by Ranzar Malk, this gang has since come under new leadership, full of faces Din Djarin has either never met before or knows all too well.

The introduction of Ranzar Malk’s gang gaveStar Warsthe opportunity to bring several notable actors into the franchise, and in one case, bring a voice actor from theanimatedStar WarsTV showsinto live-action for the first time. While the gang as a whole has only appeared in this one episode of the series so far, they have left a resounding impact on Din Djarin as a character and the show’s story, which makes their prison heist all the more important. Here’s every character in that gang explained.

Bo-Katan Kryze, Din Djarin, Grogu, and Greef Karga.

The Mandalorian Cast & Characters Guide

The Mandalorian has created a long list of new Star Wars characters and brought back some familiar ones, with an incredible cast to match.

6Ranzar Malk Is The Leader Of This Gang

Played by Mark Boone Jr.

Ranzar “Ran” Malk is the gang’s leader and the one who reaches out to Din for help with the prison heist, which he later explains is because of Mando’sRazor Crest. Not much else is known about Ran other thanhe still fosters a strong grudge towards Din, supposedly for whatever Mando did the day he decided to leave the gangand pursue bounty hunting on his own. Ran doesn’t join the job with the rest of the gang, but deals out Din’s credits shortly before being brought down by theNew Republicinside his space station, the Roost.

Mark Boone Jr. is a very prolific actor who has appeared in many movies and TV shows, though he’s perhaps most well-known or recognized for his roles as Burt in Christopher Nolan’sMementoand Flass in Nolan’sBatman Begins. Based on the nature of these past characters and more, Ran is a perfect fit for Boone Jr., who absolutely excels in bringing this no-nonsense type of gang leader to life. Though Ran’s fate on the Roost makes it impossible for him to appear again, it’s possible that Ran could return inThe Mandalorianprequel stories.

5Migs Mayfeld Is A Sharpshooter-Turned-Ally

Played by Bill Burr

Easily the most iconic of this gang, Migs Mayfeld is the new point man in the field, taking Ran’s place in the heat of all the action. A former Imperial sharpshooter who served in Burnin Konn, Mayfeld often butts heads with Din, clearly threatened by both the Mandalorian’s skills and his history with the other gang members. Mayfeld discusses a plan with the rest of the gang to double-cross Mando when he breaks them into the prison, but this plan quickly goes haywire, leading to Mayfeld’s imprisonment along with Burg and Xi’an.

Mayfeld’s story doesn’t end there, however. Mayfeld makes a surprise return inThe Mandalorianseason 2, episode 7 “Chapter 15: The Believer” when Din springs him from prison to help him get the coordinates to Moff Gideon’s light cruiser. Mayfeld earns his chance at redemption by accompanying Mando into an Imperial refinery on Morak, wherehe becomes one of the first livingStar Warscharacters to see Din’s face ever since he swore the Creed. As a show of gratitude for Mayfeld vowing to never talk about this event, Din lets him remain on Morak after he’s destroyed the refinery.

Known for his comedy career, seeing Bill Burr in a role such as this was a surprise to many, but he was truly a perfect fit. Burr has the perfect attitude for a character like Mayfeld, adding just enough comedic edge to his overall realism that makes this character’s story believable. Burr truly shines in “Chapter 15: The Believer” when he’s face-to-face with his ex-commanding officer Valin Hess on Morak, with the two taking part in a tense conversation. Outside ofStar Wars, Burr is known for plenty of other roles, mostly in the comedy genre.

4Burg Is A Devaronian With A Love For Chaos

Played by Clancy Brown

Burg is a brand-new face to Din Djarin in Ran’s gang. A massive Devaronian, Burg demands intimidation just through his mere appearance, and the way he sizes Mando up proves he’s ready for a fight at any point.Burg’s eagerness for action gets the gang in trouble a few times during their heist, most notably when he alerts a mouse droid on board the prison ship. He’s the most eager to tear off Din’s helmet, something he attempts on two different occasions, but he’s ultimately locked up with Mayfeld and Xi’an by Mando after losing their last fight.

Clancy Brown is another very prolific actor in both physical and voice roles, but uniquely, this isn’t his firstStar Warsrole. Prior to portraying Burg inThe Mandalorian,Brown voiced both Savage Oppress inStar Wars: The Clone Warsand Ryder Azadi inStar Wars Rebels- the latter of whom he played in live-action for the very first time in 2023’sAhsoka. Outside ofStar Wars, Brown is known for his role as Captain Hadley in Frank Darabont’sThe Shawshank Redemption, as well as the voice of Mr. Krabs inSpongeBob SquarePants.

When Each Season Of The Mandalorian Came Out & When They Were Filmed

The Mandalorian premiered in 2019 and has since run for three seasons. Here’s when each season was released, and when were they all filmed.

3Q9-0 (Zero) Is The Droid Mastermind

Played by Richard Ayoade (Voice) & Chris Bartlett (Body)

Easily Din’s least favorite member of the gang is the droid Q9-0, simply known as Zero to the others. Zero is programmed to tell things the way they are, which leads to him getting more than one glare from Mando’s helmet for comments about both himself and his ship. Zero pilots theRazor Crestand stays on board as the mastermind who helps to remotely map the gang through the prison ship and assist with anything else they may need. He’s distracted later on byGrogu, who’s nearly killed by the droid until Din kills Zero first.

Zero doesn’t technically reappear inThe Mandalorian, though his scrapped parts and voice do in season 2, episode 2 “Chapter 10: The Passenger.” When Frog Lady struggles to communicate directly with Din about her dire situation, she manages to rewire Zero so that she can speak into his mouthpiece in her language and end up with a translation in his voice. Din also carries a piece of Zero with him wherever he goes now, as he uses a scrapped part of Zero’s leg in lieu of a piece of armor on his thigh.

Zero is voiced by Richard Ayoade, a well-known British personality, actor, writer, and more, and is brought to life physically by Chris Bartlett. Though mostly known for the various shows he’s hosted over the years, Ayoade has also acted in movies such as Akiva Schaffer’sThe Watchand Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi’sThe Boxtrolls, and directed and pennedSubmarineandThe Double. As for Bartlett, the actor is mostly known for his various roles inThe Mandalorian, where he plays numerous droids and other background characters.

2Xi’an Is Skilled With Knives & Has A Past With Din Djarin

Played by Natalia Tena

Xi’an is the first member of the gang, aside from Ran, that Din immediately recognizes. Though never outright stated,it’s heavily implied that Din and Xi’an have a past, particularly a romantic one. Nevertheless, it quickly becomes obvious that Xi’an seeks revenge for whatever heartbreak Mando dealt her, and she becomes a key player in Mayfeld’s plan to lock Din up inside the prison ship. The target they’re going after is her brother, though the two don’t get much of a reunion before Mando locks her up with Burg and Mayfeld.

Natalia Tena is easily the most well-known for her roles in theHarry PotterandGame of Thronesfranchises, with her playing Nymphadora Tonks in the former and Osha in the latter. Tena, however, has also been a part of many other projects, making her a very accomplished actor. In her role as Xi’an, Tena brings a perfect type of ferocity that makes her a true threat, even to someone as skilled and strong as a Mandalorian. It’s possible that Tena’s Xi’an could return due to her being imprisoned rather than killed, but the character has yet to reappear.

1Qin Is Xi’an’s Brother Who Was Once Betrayed By Din Djarin

Played by Ismael Cruz Córdova

The last member of Ran’s gang is Qin, the Twi’lek brother of Xi’an who had been caught by the New Republic. As the prisoner the gang is springing on this job, Qin’s return is the only way to guarantee that the agreed-upon credits are dealt, which is the only reason he makes it back to the Roost alive with Din after trying to help the others lock him up. Not much is known about Qin other than the fact that he insists Din betrayed him and the others in the past. Qin meets his fate with Ran on the Roost.

Ismael Cruz Córdova is an actor who is now most widely known for his role as Arondir in Amazon Prime’sThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Powerseries, though he has also appeared in various other movies and TV shows. Córdova is a wonderful fit for Qin, and however brief his appearance is inThe Mandalorian, he does a wonderful job of evoking Qin’s anger about the past and his overall rough demeanor. Though Qin’s fate makes it impossible for him to return in future stories, he could, like Ran, appear in a prequel story forThe Mandalorian.
