While initially planned to air as a Max Original on the company’s streaming platform,The Penguin’supcoming premiere is shifting gears.Deadlinereports thatThe PenguinTV show is changing its release strategy, with Warner Bros. Discovery branding it an HBO Original, as it will now air on HBO and stream on Max. This comes shortly after the news about theLanternsTV show also getting moved from Max to HBO.

Why The Penguin’s Move To HBO Makes Sense
WithThe Penguinbecoming part of HBO’s programming slate, it shows Warner Bros. Discovery taking proper advantage ofThe Batmanuniverse. Although the recent and final DCEU movies struggled at the box office, as well as with their critical reception,The Batmanwas both critically and commercially successful. While expandingThe Batmanfranchise is a solid move, the idea of having it only air on Max was always a questionable choice.
The Penguin Show Cast & DC Character Guide
Set to release in 2024, The Penguin will continue to flesh out Matt Reeves' Gotham with Colin Farrell set to reprise his role as Oz Cobb.
However, havingThe Penguinair as an HBO Original shows that the studio is tapping into one of their biggest assets, which has always been HBO. Given how HBO has a massive following,The Penguinwill be able to reach a larger audience rather than only having the viewership of Max. What is also perfect with this new move is thatThe Penguinwon’t lose its place on Max, but have it as an additional platform.

Time will tell what other DC shows will joinThe Penguin, andLanterns, on HBO, since DC Studios hasParadise Lost,Booster Gold, and other series in development forChapter 1, Gods and Monsters. IfThe Penguinis a big success on HBO, that could bode really well for future spinoff series inThe Batmanuniverse. More details and an official trailer forThe Penguinwill be revealed later this month at San Dieg Comic-Con.
