Minecraft:Story Modeis a name many may recognize but have not heard in a while. Though enjoyed by a fairly large fanbase while it was released, the game was unfortunately discontinued, withTelltale relinquishing server support on June 25th, 2019, and being removed from Netflix on December 5th, 2022. Since then, many players have been upset that they can now not return to the game they once loved, thoughStory Mode’spremise does live on in otherMinecraft-themed media, like Netflix’sMinecraftseries.
While the game was available for purchase, many people had negative opinions on it for various reasons - many consider it one ofTelltale’s worst games. Reasons for this include not being an open world likeMinecraftor being childish compared to the company’s other releases, such asThe Walking Dead. However, concerning a game likeMinecraftwith a fanbase largely comprised of children, players can’t exactly blame Telltale for making it a bit less complex and serious.Minecraft: Story Modealso had a lot of strengths and may remain the bestMinecraftstoryfrom an official source.

A Minecraft Movie: Everything You Need To Know
With video game movies finally starting to become big hits, A Minecraft Movie arrived in 2025 and is shaping up to be a bona fide blockbuster.
WhileMinecraftdoesn’t have a set plot,Story Modedoes.Telltale did a great job of interpreting how communities and characters would function and act in the world ofMinecraft, and the setting of Beacon Town felt perfectly natural. They implemented features intoStory Modefrom the game, which it was based on without feeling forced, such as crafting items at specific points in the plot.Story Modeplayers were usually very familiar with regularMinecraft, so both the player and the protagonist were not new to the world, meaning they didn’t need to be treated as such.

Though when it first came out, the plotline of The Wither Storm prompted mixed opinions from fans, years later fans seem to be reminiscing on how engaging it was as a villain. Telltale tookMinecraft’sWither and created something that players hadn’t seen before, so players had a unique issue to deal with while still being in a setting they already loved. The Wither Storm theme song appears to occasionally re-emerge in popularityon social media platforms such asTikTok, and lots of content reflecting the game consistently gets thousands of views.
The Characters From Story Mode Were Rememberable, With Unique And Engaging Arcs
Minecraft: Story Mode’s Characters Were Iconic
AsMinecraft: Story Modegrew in content and fanbase, the characters became more beloved and iconic. The main cast was unique and distinctive and seemingly based on different kinds ofMinecraft playersso those who playedStory Modecould identify them - with Olivia being a Redstone, Axel being a griefer, and Petra being an explorer. The characters and plot were easily digestible, likely with the younger audience in mind. However, the game still remains in many people’s hearts, which shows that a game doesn’t necessarily have to be revolutionary to be widely enjoyed.

The “choose-your-own-adventure” narrative that the game followed allowed players to feel like they were making a difference in the lives of the charactersaround them. In a community ranking onTier Maker, characters such as Petra and Gabriel, the two involved in the first major story-changing decision, ranked significantly highly. The highest-ranked characters are Ivor and Lukas, who, in the first season, both started as antagonists of differing severity who redeemed themselves through various means. They’ve absolutely endeared themselves to the fanbase, and players loved seeing them warm up to the rest of the main cast in their arcs.

Nothing built can last forever - Ivor.
To this day, the characters still stick with people more than anything else.Reuben’s death is still a topic that riles fans of the game years later, and many who grew up with it remember it as one of the saddest things they watched or played as a child. With Minecraft being such a timeless game, it is a little disappointing that those growing up with it will likely never experienceStory Modefor themselves. Though perhaps it is a little poetic, given many of the game’s themes - after all, nothing built can last forever.
You Were The Protagonist Of Story Mode
Minecraft Story Mode Was Made In Telltale’s Signature Style
Though the controllable protagonist of the game was Jesse, players were still able to project themselves onto the character with their choices. It’s undeniable thatplayers love games where their actions directly impact the storyand storylines are not linear. This is a common theme in Telltale’s games and has become the company’s signature trait. ThoughMinecraft: Story Modeis simple compared to other games in terms of its likeness, it was a great introduction to the genre.

Though it has been done before for other game titles, preserving the open-world nature ofMinecraftin a story game would have been difficult and outside of Telltale’s traditional style. However, the personalized playthrough aspects aren’t entirely lostsince players' actions greatly affect their storylines. Two players may remember the same character completely differently, depending on the outcome of their choices.

Telltale was tasked with creating a story in the world ofMinecraft, and with such a broad fanbase, it would have been impossible to please everyone, especially when many found one of its weaknesses to be being surrounded byMinecraftat all. With the game now gone from virtual shelves, it’s highly unlikely that it will ever see a resurgence, meaning those who never got a chance to play the game don’t have any viable way of obtaining it. With the game presumably now lost to internet history, perhapsMinecraft: Story Modedidn’t deserve all the hate it received.
