According to a post on X by Project Sekai’s official handle, Hatsune Miku is set to start in a new movie produced by P.A. Works calledProject Sekai: The Broken World and Miku Who Can’t Singwhich is expected to release in theaters across Japan onJanuary 17, 2025. the announcement was also accompanied by a stunning trailer and music sung by Miku herself.

The movie will be directed by Hata Hiroyuki who has most notably worked on the storyboards forDr. Stone, Squid Girl, and directed the seriesRecently, my sister is unusual. At present, no other information has been revealed about whether the film will be released internationally or made available through streaming platforms.

As the title suggests, the anime movie will likely be set in the world ofProject Sekai,the popular mobile rhythm game centered around the beloved mascot and virtual idol but with a completely original story by Studio P.A. According to the movie’s official web domain,Project Sekai: The Broken World and Miku Who Can’t Sing’s story will follow Hoshino Ichika who hears a Miku song in a CD shop and comes across an all-new form of Hatsune Miku who later re-appears on her phone after she finishes a street performance. Miku then reveals she wants to reach more people with her music, but her songs aren’t reaching people, no matter how much she sings. Thus, after seeing Ichika’s live performance, Miku enlists Ichika to help fulfill her wish.
Having received a series of animated shorts also produced by Studio P.A. Works back in September 2023, the upcoming movie is far fromHatsune Miku’s first anime debut. Nonetheless, the allure of a new Miku and a new story is surely one that the virtual idol’s vast fan base will not be able to ignore.
