WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Yellowjackets season 3, episode 9!Misty has made plenty of grave errors while out in the wilderness, andYellowjacketsseason 3 is finally bringing back her worst decision from season 1.Until now, that action has been kept a secret from the rest of the surviving Yellowjackets. Had they figured out what she had done to keep them from getting home sooner, Misty might have been the firstYellowjacketscharacterthat the teens killed. However, the group’s response is apt to be worlds different now that several characters have no intentions of returning home any time soon.
From the first moment that teen Misty appeared on screen, it’s been difficult to explain why she makes certain decisions that may further isolate her from her peers. Whether she’s watching a rat drown, chopping off Coach’s leg (which, to be fair, gave him another year to live), orsecretly killing Crystal inYellowjacketsseason 2, Misty’s darkness has always been distinct from that of her peers out in the wilderness. However, while some of her worst actions are still hidden, one of Misty’s season 1 mistakes is finally coming back to haunt her in season 3.

Yellowjackets Season 3 Finally Brings Back The Black Box That Misty Destroyed In Season 1
Misty Destroyed The Plane’s Recorder Shortly After The Crash
For the first time since season 1,Yellowjacketsseason 3 finally brings back the plane’s black box that Misty destroyed. InYellowjacketsseason 1, episode 2, Misty was alone when she stumbled upon the black box, which contains the Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder. While the black box doesn’t have a GPS tracker in real life, season 3 describes it as a transponder device, which would have helped the authorities locate and rescue the Yellowjackets much sooner after their crash. So, Misty decided to secretly smash and disable its functions.
In real life, airplane black boxes do not have GPS trackers. They do, however, have a locator beacon that pings for 30 days and can only be activated underwater. Its signals can be tracked using sonar, but wouldn’t be helpful in the Yellowjackets' crash situation.
The reasonwhy Misty smashed the black boxis that she finally found a purpose and place in the wilderness. For the first time, Misty felt socially needed, appreciated, and included due to her survival skills. She didn’t want to lose that by returning home. In season 2, Misty confided in Crystal about destroying the black box, but Crystal’s terrified response led to Misty fatally backing her off a cliff. Now, inYellowjacketsseason 3, episode 9,Misty returns to the transponder’s hiding place to reclaim a cord that can help fix Hannah’s phone and get them back home.
What Will Natalie Do After Discovering That Misty Destroyed The Black Box?
Natalie Desperately Wants To Get Back Home
When Misty goes to retrieve the black box, she doesn’t expect to see Natalie walking by and seeing her. Like Crystal back in season 2,Natalie has a mortified reaction to seeing that Misty knew where the transponder was the entire time. Natalie has been desperate to want to go home, having led the charge to attempt to return with Kodi and Hannah inYellowjacketsseason 3, episode 8’s ending. However, after half the group opted to stay back and Shauna decided to tie up Hannah and Kodi, Nat figured her chances of leaving were getting close to impossible.
If Natalie were as far gone as someone like Shauna, she might even attempt to kill Misty after discovering what she did.
Now that Natalie knows Misty has access to a device that can help give them signals to communicate with the outside world, however, she’s going to have some conflicted feelings.Natalie will likely return to the group and expose Misty for destroying the black box and keeping them from getting rescued, which ledYellowjackets’ teens down paths of cannibalism, murder, and becoming sadistic, barbaric versions of themselves. If Natalie were as far gone as someone like Shauna, she might even try to kill Misty after discovering what she did. However, she’ll be more focused on just getting home.
